You might remember this. The cotton gima cardi that I knit a few years ago. And was not happy with.

I haven't stopped knitting and I haven't disappeared I've just had all sorts of silly knitting mistakes that have slowed my progress. But I finally have the Moorish Diamonds wrap finished and a new knit started.

I finished the socks for my husband. They are basic toe-up socks in Sheep Shop - modern colorway.
He likes them. I just hope the reinforcing in the heels and toes (crochet cotton) does the job.
Now back to something for me.
This is the Moorish Diamonds stitch pattern from Barbara Walker's A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. It will be a wrap and I've knit the first 24 inches of the main section and then lightly blocked it so you can see the pattern.
To create the width I've done 4 pattern repeats by casting on 84 stitches. I will knit an edging on the whole thing - just haven't decided which edging. The stitch pattern is a 28 row repeat but the odd rows are purls so that makes it easier. The yarn is some lace weight alpaca that I mordanted with alum and dyed with an exhausted logwood bath.
The yarn is so lightweight it feels like knitting with spiderwebs. But it's such a joy to pick this up and work on it. And it's relief not to be knitting a sweater right now.
I must say though that I wore the Mr. Lagerfeld Enjoys A Beer Jacket every day last week while I was on holiday and it performed very well. Warm, comfortable and it held up to travel wear. What more can you ask for.

The seed stitch jacket is finally done!

We left town for the holidays to visit family and hang out at the summer place for a few days. And when we came back the mail was full of wonderful, unexpected gifts from friends. Having friends who think about you is really the best gift. Rose Red sent me some Knittery yarn in just the perfect colorway for me. Although my husband has also expressed his delight with the colorway and inquired if that might be the yarn for his socks. No sir it's not - that's still in the mail.
Luisa sent me yarn from a mill in Portugal - she sent undyed yarn so I can have fun dying it myself. It's a combination of milk fiber and wool and it's so soft. I can't wait to dye this. Maybe with lac for a pale rose hat.
And dear Kat sent me a handknit and felted pin with leaves on it (probably because I'd sent her a zillion comments telling her how much I love this pin) She also sent a summery card with a bathing suit on it to remind me that it won't always be winter.
I can't think of what I've done to deserve such beautiful and thoughtful gifts - but you can be sure I'm not sending them back. Thank you friends.
I'm sure you're wondering what's happening with the seed stitch jacket. Progress is slow but I'm still working on it. The sleeves have been knit to the underarms and I'm now working on the arm holes on the fronts. Then it's back to knitting the sleeve caps and sewing the sleeves on. The whole thing looks really messy right now but here's a progress photo.
Once the sleeves have been added I'll pick up stitches for a little collar and I'll also knit little cuffs for the sleeves.
Wishing you all smooth sailing with your knitting in 2009.

Some nice things this week. I received a lovely thank you e-mail from the person who I knit the entrelac scarf for. It was guess work because I didn't know him well and only hoped he was a scarf-wearing man. Turns out he loves scarves and wears them all the time. It's fun to knit something for someone you don't know well - like using threads to make more connections.

First the finished. The entrelac scarf. Goes in the mail tomorrow.
The one skein of Lorna's Laces wasn't quite enough but I had a bit of merino/cashmere blend that was burgundy and that I overdyed with indigo so I added 8 inches of this at the end.
I have a few ideas for what to knit next for me but I'm not completely lined up for these. Also I agreed to knit my mom another pair of socks last March so I've started on these. Seems like as good time as any to confess I'm not an enthusiastic sock knitter.
My mom likes stripes so we picked out two skeins of Koigu - one red - one blue. I'm always worried about running out of yarn so I'll use some left over Sweet Georgia in a honey brown for the toes and heels. It's kind of fun knitting with red and knitting these is making me want some red socks ... like some unspecified time in the future.
Gay asked to see a modeled shot of the Habu tunic after the second renovation. Yikes - I thought it looked better than this. But here it is. Still too bunchy around the armholes but way better than it was. Also in the photo is a smocked silk necklace by Tinctory. It feels so lovely on - very light.
I've been of two minds about what to knit next. I want to do a skirt with some Rowan 4 ply cotton and after having some of the yarn in the dye pot for close to 2 weeks I've decided it's as dyed as it's going to get. So on the left is the Rowan 4 ply that I will call tobacco color and on the right is the frogged Esme yarn overdyed with indigo. I don't have a pattern but have a skirt shape in mind. But I need to swatch. And with swatching of course may change my mind.
I also have some charcoal worsted weight and some grey/blue worsted weight. Neither amounts are enough for a jacket but combined I have enough. I've been swatching and making little sketches. I still don't have a firm plan but when I photographed this I got more excited about the possibilities.
But first I have to finish those socks for my mom. Or at least one of them.

First what I'm knitting now. After the crochet scarf I wanted something that would just roll off my needles. I'd been thinking about a sweater/jacket and also another skirt but wasn't quite ready to commit to either of these. So I went to the stash - this its turning out to be an unofficial stash bust year for me - and found a single skein of Lorna's Laces purchased on impulse and on sale. I had no plans for it when I purchased it and I've pulled it out of the stash a few times with no ideas forthcoming. This time I left it on the couch for a few days and woke up one morning thinking humm ... entrelac? scarf?
